🌾 Rice is Vietnam’s key crop, with the Mekong Delta being the largest rice bowl, contributing ~50% of output and 90% of export volumes. Over the years, the Government has introduced many sustainable agricultural policies and projects to protect the environment and improve farmers’ lives.
From 2023–2024, VNF has conducted various trials to develop organic biosolutions for rice, aiming at sustainable agriculture and lowering emissions. So far, VNF has achieved great milestones: (based on the average of trials’ results)
• > 10 small- & large-scale trials across multiple provinces
• ⬇20% – 25% reduction in chemical fertilizer usage
• ⬇20% – 27% cut in pesticide costs
• 💹 Ensured productivity for farmers
🎯 On September 9, 2024, VNF organized an on-field seminar 🌾 in Tien Giang to assess the effectiveness of Oligochitosan 5% SL in controlling rice dirty panicle on the Dai Thom 8 cultivar (Oryza sativa) in Go Cong Tay, Tien Giang. This seminar is part of the Improving Private Sector Competitiveness (IPSC) Project, with ~20 rice farmers and agricultural technicians participating.
✨ Initial results from using Oligochitosan are promising:
• 93 – 97% healthy grain rate
• Longer-lasting green flag leaves
• Comparable performance to popular chemical pesticides
• Increased efficacy of other pesticides when combined
📢 Let’s hear from the farmers who visited the fields:
• Mr. Tran Van Tung expressed his enthusiasm for organic biosolutions, praising their safety for users and their eco-friendly impact.
• Mr. Truong Thanh Phong, one of the trial farmers, shared that while bio-pesticides require a higher used volume than chemical ones, they are gentle on plants, safe for users, and leave no harmful pesticide residue.
• Mr. Vo Hong Thai, an agricultural technician from Thanh Tri, commented: “Currently, farmers are using chemical pesticides more than recommended, especially in the Summer-Autumn crop. The success of bio-pesticides will be a game-changer.”
👏 The farmers’ objective feedback and evaluations confirm that shifting towards organic biosolutions in farming is inevitable. The early success and encouraging results motivate VNF to continue developing green solutions for farmers.
🏆 VNF extends our great gratitude towards our partners and the farmers of Thanh Hiep, Thanh Tri, Go Cong Tay, Tien Giang for their support in making this seminar a success. VNF sincerely appreciates the support for this seminar from the Agency for Enterprise Development under the Ministry of Planning and Investment (AED), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Improving Private Sector Competitiveness (IPSC) project.
